  • sega genesis NBA Live games

do you need to put in a Master code for these basketball games because
last time i tried to make a game genie code for it these letter and numbers keep
    popping up

I just tried NBA Live 96... looks like you need a master code (at least for Gens emulator).

EDIT: Didn't see any letters or numbers though, so don't know why you saw those.

P.S. Good to see you're back Damin.

Hey Tony what games have you ran into that that new master code guide you worte not apply to? I have been using MESS and with your guide its a real snap to make master codes. I would like to see if there is a method for these other games.

Helder, the method in my guide didn't work on NBA Live 96. In that case, I use the back-up method. Takes a little more time, but almost always works...

Make an assembly trace log with the game starting properly. Then make a second assembly trace log with the game NOT starting because of a failed checksum check (ie. having a Game Genie code entered). Now it's just a matter of comparing the two assembly trace logs. With NBA Live 96 (and most Genesis ROMs), the game starts at ROM address $000200, so I have both asm logs at $000200 and just keep scrolling down until I see where they branch in different directions. Then, as you know, you'll usually just need to change a conditional branch.

Made some interesting comparisons just now, in your guide we do a search for $018E and we can usually find the branch and with these nba live games I noticed that $018C is always before the compare and branch which is the master code. So I would like to test this theory out on some other games besides the nba live games since they use the same programming, would you say most EA games are like this?

Edit: I tried this on other EA games like Road Rash 3 and searching for the $018C helped as it was a little further down on the log but not much and had a bne with a cmpi.l right before that bne. So I'm guessing that doing a search for $018C in these EA games will make finding Master codes a bit easier.

I noticed the same thing. In NBA Live 96, they use $018C as a Long Word (4 bytes), so that would include $018E...

Sounds good Damin. Nothin' better for testing than real hardware.

Damin, I'm not sure what you're trying to say... do you mean that the master code works, but you're getting stuck at the main menu? I didn't see a main menu with a red screen.
