  • New GSHI feature: Hackers of Lore Q&A

[If you wish to view the completed interviews see Hackers of Lore Q&A]

Perhaps in a fit of nostalgia, I've decided it would be a good idea to record some of the thoughts and ideas of a few prominent hackers, particularly those who are not currently active. I've put together a basic...template of sorts, which will serve as a guideline to the Q&A sessions we'll hold.

Also, it should be noted that I might not always be the best interviewer for some hackers, as I am but one person and can't possibly be intimately apprised of every hacker's accomplishments. With this in mind, it would be beneficial if other members of GSHI staff, and even people not on staff at all, perform some of the interviews. Anyway, here's the basic list of questions I've come up with:

[Custom question, which provides some background for the reader. For example, "You hacked the first well-known music mod for a PSX game. What inspired you to do so?"]

What is your favorite code/hack that you hacked?

What is your favorite code/hack of all time?

Who would you say influenced you the most in the video game hacking scene? Who did you 'look up to' when you first entered the scene? (doesn't have to be the same person for both)

    What was your first code/hack?

What do you think is the most difficult type of code/hack to hack, and why?

What is your favorite type of code/hack?

What is your least favorite aspect of hacking?

What do you dislike most about the hacking scene?

Which game did you find the most fun to hack, and why?

Do you have any specific hacking techniques or peculiarities?

Did you ever hack an awesome code, or find an address in memory that would've yielded an awesome code, but then lost it somehow?

What was the most difficult, 'hair-pulling' hack you've ever accomplished?

Was there ever a code you just couldn't get to work quite correctly (something you hacked/attempted to hack)?

Aside from hacking and gaming, how do you like to spend your time?

What do you think must happen for the video game hacking scene to continue to thrive?

One last question: if you had one thing to say to current, aspiring, and future hackers, what would it be?

First up include ZoMBiE343, and our own KingEdgar0 and Viper187.

I'll need to track down Czar before I can interview him, heh.

I'm not sure how to phrase it.

              12. Was there ever a code you just couldn't get to work quite correctly?

There must be at least one for everybody I'd assume. Odds are they never mentioned the code anywhere either because they wouldn't think somebody else would have checked into it.

Incidentally, I've tried to restrict those interviewed to long-time members of the scene (10 years or so) for now, but we'll probably loosen that down the road.

The new section has been created, and Viper187's is the first Q&A in Hackers of Lore

You'll find the new section in the Community drop-down on the main page.

                        ZoMBiE343's Q&A has been added

I've also added another question, suggested by Viper187: "What was the most difficult, 'hair-pulling' hack you've ever accomplished?"

An idea for a question: What is your least favorite aspect of hacking?

Cool; I've added it (and removed the numbers, since I'm not preserving them in the Q&A's anyway).

I thought of something: the person interviewing should probably have a few custom questions of their own. This of course means that the person interviewing should know a little about the hacker being interviewed, but it would add significance to the Q&A, and particularly the fact that the name of the interviewer is listed (after all, if all questions but one are from a template, who the hell cares who performed the interview?).

I think everyone's had that happen once or twice.
