  • GSHI 9th Anniversary Contest (free) Sign-Up Roster

As you (should) know, GSHI is having a 9th Anniversary Contest, as sort of a dry run for the 10th Anniversary Contest (and, hopefully, a contest every year thereafter). Though the Hacking Competition has been put on hold until next year, the Gaming Tournament and Artwork Contest will still be held.

The gaming contest will consist of three (emulated) MAME games:

    Bust a Move Again
    NBA Maximum Hang Time
    Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Two players will face off, and one staff member will sit in to ensure everything goes properly. Each game will be played for elimination (the winner of the first match will go on to play the next player), and the overall winners of each game will face off in a surprise game, to be revealed at that time.

As for the (meager) prizes for the Gaming Tournament:

1st place winner - GSHI T-shirt + $75 gift certificate to EB Games (negotiable if you're somewhere that doesn't have such a store).
    2nd place winner - GSHI T-shirt.
    3rd place winner - GSHI T-shirt.

And for the GSHI Artwork Contest (GSHI.org logo creation; put to a GSHI staff vote):

1st place winner: His/her artwork on the official GSHI T-shirt + GSHI T-shirt + $75 gift certificate to EB Games OR the art supplies store of your choosing.

Staff, members, and total strangers to GSHI.org are welcome to sign up (in fact, this thread has been posted at several other sites as well, and everyone's welcome to link to it anywhere they want). And, as this is a hacking scene site, and some people value their anonymity, a winner may choose to waive his/her prize(s), and they will be awarded to the next player down the winning ladder.

    Let the sign-ups begin!

      Cool.

Also, as a note to everyone, the MAME emu and required games will be packaged and supplied to all players; you won't have to bring anything to the table but an internet connection, and a desire to play some games.

As an additional note, the GSHI artwork must not contain copyrighted material (images of Mario, Link, Cloud, a Moogle, etc), as they will be on the official GSHI T-shirts, and I'd rather not bother paying royalties at the moment.

To keep the competition on-track, the Gaming Tournament sign-up cut-off date will be the 24th, and the tournament itself will begin on the 26th.

The cut-off date for submissions to the Artwork Contest will be the 12th of August.

I considered signing up for Bust-a-Move-Again (don't like fighters or sports games) But, I'm in a no-win situation if I win I can pretty much guarantee I will be accused of cheating (thanks for choosing MAME ). A likely outcome would have been that I'd get handed my ar5e being one of the old farts here and generally being rather pants at the 'playing' part of games. Seriously though I don't know if a gaming compo is the best idea - you might have noticed this place is choc full of cheats (can you trust any regular here?).

I personally was hoping for some sort of retro hacking compo.

In mame you cant cheat online unless all ppl have hacked or cheated roms or someway of cheating, which i dont know of,if one person somehow cheats its only on his mame and not on others,as the games have to be exactlly the same so they sync.I know you cant win by cheating so there isnt gonna be a question about you winning or losing and there will be one more person there to observe.

Yeah; I'm not too worried about cheating.

We were going to have a hacking competition, but there just wasn't enough time to plan all the intricacies of such a thing. It will occur next year, however. Please do give your input and ideas on it now.

And, you should sign up. So far, there are only two players, so if you were the last to sign up, you'd be guaranteed at least a free GSHI t-shirt, heh.
