TIL there's a petition going around to have the country renamed the Doominican Republic.
Seriously, though, people do need to be extremely careful if they consider traveling there.Last edited by xirtamehtsitahw; 06-12-2019, 08:05:42 PM.Tempus fugit, ergo, carpe diem.
Time flies, therefore, seize the day.

Another American tourist died this week at a resort in the Dominican Republic. Leyla Cox, 53, came to the island on June 5 to celebrate her birthday.
Her family said she was supposed to return home two days ago, but now, they're planning her funeral. Cox died on June 10, and according to her son, U.S. officials said she died of a heart attack.
At least six other Americans have died since January, some under questionable circumstances.
Miranda Schaup-Werner and a couple from Maryland, Edward Holmes and Cynthia Day all died at Bahia Principe hotels.

Preliminary autopsies released by Dominican authorities said they all had fluid in their lungs and respiratory failure. The FBI is conducting toxicology reports on those three deaths.
The series of fatalities are causing concern among Americans thinking of coming to the island. According to the State Department, 13 Americans died there all of last year and three were considered homicides.
In a statement, the U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic said, "The safety and security of U.S. citizens that live in, work in, and visit the Dominican Republic remains our highest priority. These incidents are tragic and we offer our deepest condolences to those personally impacted."

A group of Jimmy Buffett diehards from Oklahoma were sick as hell in Paradise — the latest in an ever-growing list of tourists to be sickened during a jaunt to the Dominican Republic, a report said.
Dana Flowers, a travel agent who vacationed to Punta Cana with the Buffett-loving Central Oklahoma Parrothead Association, said that four days into their April trip, he and other members came down with a mysterious illness.
“I can’t even explain how sick I was,” Flowers told Oklahoma’s News 4.
And in no time, he was wasting away, he continued. “Lost 14 pounds during that time and was really sick.”
By the end of the vacation, 47 of the 114 Oklahoman's reported becoming ill, Flowers said, with many of them too sick to leave their rooms at the Hotel Riu Palace Macao.

I have a coworker who says her husband is from the Dominican Republic and says this has been a normal thing forever and he's wondering why it has just suddenly started appearing in the news. I'm kind of lost on the situation. He makes it sound like there was more of a thing for people getting attacked walking around the poorer areas wearing jewelry and stuff that people thought they could take and sell for food for their kids. Not sure about all of these things that sound like poison in peoples' drinks.
