  • Billy Mitchell stripped of scores, banned

Full investigation shows King of Kong star used emulators, not real hardware.

Twin Galaxies, the long-running video game high score tracker recognized by Guinness World Records, has banned Billy Mitchell and removed all of his past scores from its listings after determining that two million-plus-point Donkey Kong performances he submitted were actually created with an emulator, and not on original arcade hardware as he consistently claimed. The move means that the organization now recognizes Steve Wiebe as the first player to achieve a million point game in Donkey Kong, a question central to the 2007 cult classic documentary The King of Kong.

Nearly two months ago, Mitchell's scores were also removed from the leaderboards at Donkey Kong Forum. Forum moderator Jeremy "Xelnia" Young cited frame-by-frame analysis of the board transitions in Mitchell's Donkey Kong tapes, which showed visual artifacts suggesting they were generated by early versions of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) and not original Donkey Kong arcade hardware.

Somehow I've actually already seen a little documentary on it on youtube. I don't know how I was led to the video, but I somehow sat through the whole thing which felt longer than it was, and it did well making Billy seem shady.

That guy seemed very robotic in the videos, just repeating the same exact things word for word over and over. Aside from the emulator, people were pointing out he was lying on camera of using an arcade board for a different Donkey Kong game too even though I'm not sure how that matters because we'd see a different game on the screen?? I'd never heard of the guy or anything about it until about a month ago when the videos popped up somewhere, I might have accidentally clicked on it from a Reddit link mistaking it for something else.

His witnesses mean nothing and do the same robotic talk he does almost like they're threatened or paid to do it.

Billy Mitchell doesn't have a case. Lawyers won't take it, as they know they'll lose. He cheated, lied about it, got caught anyway, and is now trying to sue Twin Galaxies for their trying to uphold some modicum of integrity (banning him and removing his ill-gotten scores/records). What has this world come to...?

Guinness World Records has reinstated a number of classic video game world records held by Billy Mitchell.

The move comes just over two years after Mitchell's records were expunged following an investigation by Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard, which partners with Guinness to adjudicate video game records.

That investigation found that recordings of some of Mitchell's record performances on Donkey Kong were not achieved on legitimate arcade hardware, based on extensive video analysis that showed signs of emulator use. Twin Galaxies has not changed its position on Mitchell's records, resulting in a split between the two record-tracking organizations.

Guinness now once again recognizes Mitchell as the first player to achieve a perfect Pac-Man score of 3,333,360 points in 1999 and the first player to reach 1 million points in Donkey Kong in 2005.

"It's been a long time coming," Mitchell said in an interview with Ars Technica.
